How to Become a Pharmacy Technician in Alabama (Step-by-Step Guide)

Step 1: Meet the basic requirements

Before you apply, confirm you meet ALBOP's current applicant standards. As of 2026, Alabama allows applicants who are at least 17 years old. The Board does not require a high school diploma or GED for pharmacy technician registration, which makes the role accessible to motivated high school students and career changers alike.

Step 2: Register with the Alabama Board of Pharmacy

Create an account in the ALBOP Licensure Gateway and submit your pharmacy technician registration application. Total registration fees are about $104 ($60 application, $40 background check, $4 processing fee as of 2026).

Once ALBOP approves your registration, you can start working in a pharmacy right away under pharmacist supervision. You do not need to finish training before your first day on the job. You do need to complete approved training within your first six months of registration under Alabama Administrative Code 680-X-2-.14. Step 3: Start working as a pharmacy technician

Entry-level pharmacy technicians in Alabama work in retail chains, independent pharmacies, hospitals, and specialty settings. Typical duties include counting and labeling medications, processing prescriptions, managing inventory, handling insurance claims, and helping patients at the counter. Every task happens under pharmacist supervision.

Most Alabama pharmacy technicians earn roughly $17 to $19 per hour to start, with higher pay in hospitals and for certified technicians. Pay varies by city, employer, and experience. The role is a strong entry point into healthcare with steady demand across all 67 counties.

Step 4: Complete ALBOP-approved training within six months

Rule 680-X-2-.14 requires technicians who received initial ALBOP registration on or after January 1, 2020 to complete a board-approved training program within six months of registration. When you finish, upload your certificate of completion through the Licensure Gateway within 10 days. Missing the deadline can result in registration suspension and fines for the employing pharmacy.

Step 5: Advance with PTCB certification (optional)

PTCB certification is not required to work in Alabama. Your ALBOP registration and completed training are enough to stay compliant. Many technicians choose certification later because certified pharmacy technicians (CPhT) often earn more and qualify for hospital, specialty, and lead roles that non-certified techs cannot access.
